Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire has accepted President Barack Obama's offer to be commerce secretary, two administration officials said Monday.
If Gregg moves to the Cabinet, New Hampshire's Democratic governor would appoint a replacement. Now that would be an awesome thing indeed...:)
That could give Democrats the 60-seat majority needed to overcome Republican attempts to use filibusters to block legislation.
Update (11:55 p.m.): Doh! CNN update indicates replacement will be of the Republican stripe. Guess it was fortuitous that I used "Potentially" in the blog heading...:)
Further thought though...this is one more instance that demonstrates that gubernatorial appointments to these seats are fraught with problems. Obama carried New Hampshire by about 10 points in the election. Who's to say that reflecting the "will of the people" means making a deal to appoint a former Gregg staffer?
Update (12:17 a.m.): Much more enlightened thinking, here. See, now this is why I need to stay away from some of this U.S. stuff...
